When it comes to video online, there is one site that people think of above all others: YouTube. You can probably also add Facebook in there now that the social media giant has fully embraced video. But, believe it or not, there are actually other video sites out there that you might be interested in sharing your content on.
We take a look at six of them here going from largest to smallest.
Vimeo
How Big?
Monthly audience of 130,000,000 visitors
What type of accounts does it have?
- Vimeo Plus: $5/month billed annually
- Vimeo Pro: $17/month billed annually
- Vimeo Business: $50/month billed annually
Vimeo can be thought of as a little more refined than YouTube. Unlike YouTube where people will post pretty much anything they’ve shot on their phone, most of the videos you will find on Vimeo seem to be from people who really enjoy making videos and have put at least some effort into it.
Many film students and professional videographers choose Vimeo to showcase their work, as it’s more known for professional work than YouTube is. People who have video portfolios will often opt to host them on Vimeo rather than the more general public oriented YouTube. You also won’t find snippets of TV shows and Hollywood movies on Vimeo. Everything on this site is original.
It doesn’t have the viewership of YouTube, but it’s the site of choice for video professionals.
Dailymotion
How big?
Monthly audience of 100,000,000 visitors.
What type of accounts does it have?
- Free
A French video site, Dailymotion is basically the European YouTube. Much like its American counterpart, you will find all kinds of videos on Dailymotion, from phone-shot funny animal videos to excerpts from television shows and movies. The copyright rules — although they exist — are as lax on Dailymotion as they are on YouTube. People can have their own channels and you also get to experience the fun of skipping ads at the beginning of Dailymotion videos.
Something to keep in mind about Dailymotion is that the size of the video file you upload is limited to 2GB and the length of video you’re allowed to upload is 60 minutes.
LiveLeak
How big?
Monthly audience of 45,000,000 visitors.
What type of accounts does it have?
- Free
LiveLeak sets itself apart by being more overtly political than other sites. Although users can technically post any content they like to this United Kingdom-based site (as long as it doesn’t violate their posting policy), it does seem to have more of a political bent than the more general content you see on a site like YouTube or Dailymotion. “News & Politics” is the first of the channels listed in the Channels tabs and it has specific tabs for Ukraine and Syria, two countries experiencing political turmoil right now. It also has a forum where you can comment.

Veoh
How big?
Monthly audience of 15,000,000 visitors.
What type of accounts does it have?
- Free
Veoh is kind of like YouTube light. It has much the same functionality as the larger video site, but with a fraction of the audience. It plays host to a lot of user-generated content, but you can also find copyrighted content on the site. It has a lot of different channels to choose from and accepts a lot of different formats for uploading. Plus, there are no restrictions on file size or length. One drawback is the site relies at least partially on Flash Player for playback, which is increasingly a bad idea.
Break
How big?
Monthly audience of 14,000,000 visitors.
What type of accounts does it have?
- Free
As the name implies, Break is all about short, entertaining videos (and photos) that you can consume when you just want to take a break and enjoy a laugh. The site is apparently geared toward young men, and the content reflects that with categories such as “Pranks & Fails,” “Saucy,” “Weird” and “Geeky.”
It accepts videos in AVI, WMV, MPG and MOV formats and has a cap on video file size at 60MB.
Metacafe
How big?
Monthly audience of 12,000,000 visitors.
What type of accounts does it have?
- Free
Like Break, Metacafe is geared toward short videos that entertain. The really unique thing about Metacafe is that you can actually earn some money from your videos. If your video hits 20,000 views, you are eligible to get $5 for every 1,000 views.
Although YouTube undoubtedly rules the internet when it comes to video, other video sites still draw significant numbers and it might be worth checking some of them out for posting content or advertising. No matter what site you choose to share on, animated explainer videos are always a good bet.
